This is what we’ve been waiting for – the DVD edition of TT Closer to the Edge which is now on sale. I guess most of us have seen the movie but if you missed it, here’s the chance to catch up. And if, like me, you saw the film more than once, here’s the chance to re-live it and hold onto it.

I zapped it into the player when my copy arrived and it turned into quite a late night by the time I’d watched the main film and then the second disc of extras. These include a fascinating chat with John McGuinness’s dad and a revealing feature on Conor Cummins, shot a year on from the conclusion of the original film which ended with Conor doing his Superman impression off the Verandah. We see Conor having physio, go inside the much talked-about hyperbaric chamber, and find out what mum and dad, Carole and Billy, made of their son’s adventures in 2010.

Cinemanx’s buccaneering blast through the psyche of the road racer is thoroughly recommended for anyone’s Christmas list.

On the subject of DVDs, a great accompaniment to the action on the Mountain Course is the DVD of this year’s Southern 100. Produced by Greenlight, the film reminds us what a great event it was for Michael Dunlop as well as showing us what really went on when men and machines came together in unscripted fashion at Ballabeg. Poignantly, there are also sequences of the late Wayne Hamilton underlining what a terrific racer he was, and what a great loss he is to the sport.

Meanwhile one of the best presents I’ve had as Christmas time approaches was the news from Macau that Ian Hutchinson had taken third place in his first race back after injury. Given the extent of Hutchy’s injuries and the length of time it’s taken him to recover, this has to be one of the great performances in motorsport all year, and a sure sign that Hutchy will be a force to be reckoned with on the island next year.
